Perez quits as Real Madrid president

2003 - In June, England captain David Beckham signs for $41 million from Manchester United. Real clinch 29th league title on final day of the season.

Coach Vicente del Bosque replaced by Carlos Queiroz.

2004 - Real lose in King's Cup final to unfancied Real Zaragoza, are knocked out of Champions League quarter-finals by Monaco and finish fourth in league.

In May, Real make first high-profile defensive signing under Perez with Argentine defender Walter Samuel joining from AS Roma for $26 million.

Queiroz replaced by former player Jose Antonio Camacho.

July 11, Perez wins a landside victory to earn a second term as Real Madrid president.

August - Real sign England internationals Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Owen.

September - Camacho resigns as Real Madrid coach after just three league games, assistant Mariano Garcia Remon takes over.

December - Garcia Remon is sacked and replaced by Brazilian coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

2005 - In June Real end second season in a row without a trophy, finishing runners-up to Barcelona in the title race. Knocked out of Champions League by Juventus and lost to second division Valladolid in the King's Cup.

Aug - Real spend around 90 million euros on rejuvenating their squad with Brazilian forwards Robinho, Julio Baptista, Uruguayan internationals Carlos Diogo and Pablo Garcia and Spain defender Sergio Ramos all signing.

Dec - Real sack Luxemburgo with Real six points behind Barcelona. Arrigo Sacchi resigns as sporting director. Reserve team coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro takes charge.

2006 - Real take over from Manchester United as the richest football club in the world, according to consultants Deloitte.

Real lose 1-0 to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie and then lose 2-1 to Real Mallorca in the league, leaving them 10 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Feb 27 - Perez resigns as president, Fernando Martin is named as his successor.
