Perez quits as Real Madrid president

Came to prominence in late 1970s as a politician in the UCD, the party that
was involved in Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy after the
death of Franco.
President of ACS, Spain's biggest construction and services company.
February 1995 - Stands against Ramon Mendoza for presidency of Real Madrid
but loses by 698 votes.
2000 - Stands against Mendoza's successor Lorenzo Sanz who calls election
after Real win second European Cup in three seasons.
Promises to buy Portugal midfielder Luis Figo out of his contract with
arch-rivals Barcelona for a then world record fee of $56 million. Says he will
pay some $8.5 million for the season tickets of all Real members if he fails to
close deal.
Claims shock election victory with 55 percent of votes. Figo signs on a
six-year deal.
2001 - Perez brokers a deal with Madrid city council to sell Real's
city-centre training ground for a reported 480 million euros ($594 million),
clearing club's 270 million euros of debt.
Real win their first league title in four years.
Zinedine Zidane signs from Juventus for world record $66 million.
2002 - Centenary season. Lose in final of King's Cup to Deportivo Coruna, but
win Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park.
Ronaldo signs from Inter Milan for $44 million, minutes before transfer
deadline expires.
Real win European Supercup and World Club Cup.
