Award-winning scriptwriter Lan Xiaolong is known for his military TV series.
But in his new work, The Good Fellas, the veteran author is seeking a breakthrough on exploring the complexity of humanity.
The 45-episode series, following an unlikely friendship between a Communist Party intelligence agent and a Kuomintang officer, will run on Beijing Satellite TV starting Sept 26.
Through the conflicts set against a wartime backdrop, the tale explores a number of themes, such as ideal, brief, power, lust and freedom.
Actors Li Chen and Zhang Yi star in the big-budget series, which features some expensive props, such as a full-size Harley motocycle replica.
To provide the best visual effects, the camera crew used some Hollywood-level facilities, to produce scenarios that are as high-quality as those in a digital movie.
