Pirates & Sorcerers flaunt musical alchemy

Art beat in January

Six Chinese musicians who combine classical and other music genres formed the group Pirates & Sorcerers last year, and they are now ready to play their debut concert in Beijing. Violist Wang Jianmin, cellist Song Zhao, double bass player Xu Jingying, pianist Li Yue, violinist Tang Yun and percussionist Li Nanzi will present crossover works that were adapted by composer Zhang Xiaozhen, including The Phantom of the Opera, Cinema Paradiso and Goldberg Variations. Three members of the group, who are also soprano and pop singers, will sing in the show.

Turkish dance

Art beat in January

Turkish dance theater show Fire of Anatolia by Mustafa Erdogan fuses ballet, modern dance and other elements into traditional Turkish movements to depict mythological and cultural history. The company has toured extensively, performing at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Madison Square Garden in New York, in front of the pyramids in Egypt, and most recently in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. On this tour, the company's sixth in China, belly dancer Saniye Sinem Guven plays the lead. The show will tour to Guangzhou on Jan 10.

Watercolor artist

Shao Jiarong is featured in a new exhibition at Xintiandi Club One. The watercolor artist was born in 1936 and was a founding professor in the art department of Nantong Normal University. He was known for taking students on sketch trips to ancient water towns in Anhui province and the Yangtze Delta. Such landscapes have also provided endless inspiration for his own creations. A total of 55 pieces are on show, consisting of watercolor paintings and prints.
