Owing to the wealth accumulated by Huizhou tradesmen from the mid-Southern Song (1127 - 1279) to Emperor Qianlong's reign (1736-1796) in the Qing dynasty, an influential, regional architectural style was able to develop in Huizhou.
Huangshan (the Yellow Mountains), formerly Yishan, is one of the most famous scenic spots in China. According to a legendary story, once Huang Di (the Yellow Emperor) made pills of immortality in this mountain, thereafter it has been called Huangshan.
