President Hu Jintao said in a New Year message on Monday that the Chinese mainland will safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and push ahead with peaceful reunification.

Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's wife pleaded innocent to corruption charges as a trial that could eventually force Chen from office got under way on Friday.
