Equal college opportunities for Henan students
Henan legislator Li Guangyu bowed to reporters, wishing his plea for fairer education opportunities for Henan students could be heard by China's Ministry of Education, at a NPC workshop on Sunday.
Li, head of the Henan branch of the Affiliated High School of Peking University, called for a change to the status quo that top universities enrolled disproportionally few Henan students, than from other provinces. "In 2013, the chance for a Henan candidate to enter Peking University is 31 times harder than a Beijing student," he said.
"Henan's candidates for the national college entrance account for one tenth of the country's total. But the province only has one out of 116 national key universities," he added.
Li called for more prestigious universities to relocate, or set up branches in Henan, for example, to relocate China Agricultural University to Henan, China's biggest grain-producing province.
