Chinese researchers successfully set up an automatic weather observation station recently on Mount Qomolangma, the highest such station in China, Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

After four days of effort by the research team, which ferried the meteorological equipment up the mountain, the system was placed in the East Rongbuk Glacier area at an elevation 5,830 meters. It will monitor and record wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. Researchers will make regular treks to the station to record data and check the system.

There are now three observation stations on the north slope of the mountain, at elevations of 4,276 m, 5,190 m and now at 5,830 m, forming a complete observation segment and providing important information about environmental changes in the area.
