Two pilot whales arrive at their new Chinese home from Japan at Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, on Friday. About 20 workers from the park are moving one of the pilot whales into the oceanarium after it was placed on the oceanarium's second floor by a lift machine. The whales, one male and one female, are the first two such whales ever to be in ocean parks other than those in the US and Japan. Also known as pothead whales, one adult pilot whale could weigh 3,600 kilograms, equal to the weight of 10 bottlenose dolphins. The two that arrived at Hangzhou are aged from 6 to 8, and weigh 600 kilograms each. They're so gigantic that it took about 20 park workers to carry and place them in their new home. A hoisting machine, steel cord and a lift were all used to help move them. [Photo/IC] |
