Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has tightened security checks at entry ports to curb weapons smuggling, the city's customs authorities told Xinhua on Friday.
According to the Urumqi Customs, security checks have been stepped up for individuals, luggage, transport facilities and postal deliveries at land border crossings.
Xue Jinlou, head of customs, said they will destroy trafficking networks and eliminate weapons smuggling risk in the region.

Vehicles are prohibited to park within 100 meters around schools in Urumqi, ts.cn reported, citing the local public security bureau. Police will also enforce security near campus to protect primary and middle school students.

Britain condemns terrorist attack in China's Xinjiang
British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Thursday condemned the terrorist attack in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which left at least 31 dead and 94 injured Thursday morning.

The United States condemns the " horrific" terrorist attack in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the White House said Thursday.
"This is a despicable and outrageous act of violence against innocent civilians, and the United States resolutely opposes all forms of terrorism," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

China's minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun on Thursday called for doing utmost to treat the injured people in Xinjiang terrorist attack, and severely punishing those terrorists.
