Enzyme maker seeks China expansion

The world largest enzyme maker, Novozymes, is hoping to expand its market share in the fields of household care, agriculture and bioenergy in China, its second largest market after the United States.

Peder Holk Nielsen, president and CEO of Novozymes, said on Friday that the household care market in China is expected to deliver strong growth for the company, given the country's size.

Nielsen spoke during the signing ceremony of a framework agreement with Guangzhou Liby Group, China's largest detergent producer, to jointly develop new enzyme-based solutions for cleaning products.

About 36 percent of the global supplies of enzymes for the household care industry come from the Danish company. Novozymes has grown about 10 percent annually from 2008 and 2013.

Chen Kaixuan, president of Liby Group, said adding more enzymes and reducing chemical elements in cleaning products will cost more, but it will improve cleaning capacity and environmental compatibility.

About 80 percent of Liby's products are produced with enzymes, and the ratio is expected to be raised in the future to enhance the company's medium and high-end product portfolio, Chen said.
