Danish artist's world-traveling artworks will be shown at Faurschou Foundation Beijing from April 30.
Danh Vo's work We the People is a collection of more than 250 copper pieces of a 1:1 copy of the Statue of Liberty. Rather than make a new, whole Statue of Liberty, Vo has reconstructed individual elements and distributed them throughout the world in various exhibition venues over the past few years. The artworks shown at Danh Vo: We The People (Detail) at the gallery is part of them. As the prelude to the exhibition says, the work raises questions about the subject of freedom, including whether or not it is necessarily everyone's human right.
Vo was born in Vietnam and fled the country with his family in 1979. In a boat built by his father, they intended to get to the United States, but they ended up in Denmark after being picked up by a Danish container ship in the Pacific. There is a strong biographical element to his work's narrative.
