Couple found guilty of embezzling public funds

An official and her husband in Chongqing have been sentenced to imprisonment for embezzling public funds.

Zhao Qin, former director of the finance sector of Jiangjin district's transport commission, was sentenced to 16 years in jail for embezzling 2.82 million yuan ($454,700) from transportation funds from 2007 to 2012, Chongqing Evening News reported on Monday.

Dai Ping, Zhao's husband, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment with three years' probation for collaborating with Zhao to embezzle 65,000 yuan.

The couple also failed to explain the source of family income totaling 6 million yuan, and that money has been confiscated.

Both defendants agreed with the sentence and neither appealed, the report said.
