Many couples dream of having twins, but for one 16-year-old single mother, two babies have brought pain and depression.

Twin boys were born on Sunday night after only 29 weeks of pregnancy. They weighed 1.4 kg and 1.3 kg, much lighter than the normal weight of at least 2.5 kg, according to a report by Nanfang Metropolis Daily.

The premature babies suffered serious problems with their lungs, blood circulation and kidneys.

The older of the two died on Wednesday morning, and the younger one is being treated in the intensive-care unit at People's Hospital of Longhua New Area in Shenzhen.

"The baby's situation is very critical," a hospital press official, surnamed Liu, said on Thursday. "The doctors are making every effort to save him."

To protect the young mother, neither of the parents' names were reported.

The father, 20, never showed up, according to the newspaper report quoting the mother. He turned off his cellphone and hid after being informed of the babies' plight.

"His phone was put through after I gave birth," the mother was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "First, he said he had to go back to his hometown to discuss it with his parent, but later he said I was lying."

The couple met in a factory in Dongguan, between Shenzhen and Guangzhou, last year and soon moved in together. The woman found herself pregnant in September.

The father was in a panic but did not clearly suggest an abortion, the woman was quoted as saying. She said she did not receive any medical examinations during the pregnancy.

Family members and friends did not detect her pregnancy until she visited her uncle in Shenzhen on March 29 and showed symptoms of labor the next day, the newspaper said.

The woman's parents came from Jiangxi province to care for her, expressing their hopes that the father would come and take responsibility.

The local government of Longhua New Area has arranged for psychologists and social workers to provide professional services to the woman, who has also received aid from charity organizations.

The government contacted officials in Shaoyang, Hunan province, hometown of the father, in an effort to get the man to return.
