An obstetrician-gynecologist in Fuping county, Shaanxi province, was given a two-year suspended death sentence at Weinan Intermediate People's Court on Tuesday after being found guilty of human trafficking.
The court found that Zhang Shuxia, 55, former deputy director of obstetrics at Fuping County Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital, sold seven babies that she delivered after persuading their parents to give them up on false claims that the babies suffered congenital disease or disabilities.
The Weinan city procuratorate said at the trial that Zhang committed the crime from 2011 to 2013 and caused the death of one baby that was trafficked.
Four members of the medical staff in the hospital also stood trial on Jan 6 for neglecting their duties. The judgment in their cases will be delivered later.
