Guangxi highway project hits roadblock

Villagers in Xiangzhou county, the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, have forced a delay in a highway project amid accusations that the highway is substandard, Guangxi Daily reported.

“The highway, which is still under construction, has had many cracks, and we suspect the project has serious quality problems,” villager Tan Haizhi said.

The 11.8-km highway will benefit more than 10 villages after it is finished in two years at a cost of more than 6 million yuan ($992,000).

The Xiangzhou county bureau of communications denied the highway is jerry- built.

“The highway has no quality problems,” bureau Director Chen Lidang said.

The highway project still needs approval from highway officials before construction can resume, Chen said.

Officials have launched an investigation into the highway’s problems.
