GUANGZHOU - Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang has urged improvements to legislative work that would allow legislation to adapt better to China's development needs and reflect the people's will.

Zhang made the remarks at a meeting held during an inspection tour from May 30 to June 1 in South China's Guangdong province, where he visited a number of companies to do field research on improving legislative work, according to an official statement released on Sunday.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, urged legislative staff to practice democratic legislation and expand channels for people to participate in law-making process.

He asked them to strengthen scientific legislation by doing more field research and improve legislation evaluation by soliciting opinions from all sides.

While visiting an environmental protection company in Guangdong, Zhang addressed the imperative need for improving legislation related to ecological protection.

While visiting the manufacturing workshop of an elevator company, he said relevant regulations must be in place to ensure the quality of special equipment and people's safety.

He also urged enhancing intellectual property rights (IPR) protection to activate companies' creativity and sharpen their core competitiveness, according to the statement.
