BEIJING - China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) on Saturday ordered authorities to step up regulatory efforts to ensure market order and safety during the upcoming holidays, according to a circular on its website.

The SAIC asked local agencies to beef up supervision and launch targeted crackdowns in the food market as the New Year and Spring Festival approach.

Misconduct such as the abuse of illegal additives, clenbuterol and recycled cooking oil should be specially targeted, the circular read.

Meanwhile, the SAIC said it will work with other departments to regulate entertainment activities, including banning unlicensed Internet cafes and pornographic publications.

It will also emphasize road safety and the supervision of fireworks markets that are most prone to problems during the holiday season. Efforts to attack pyramid schemes should also be strengthened during the period, the circular said.

China's Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, the most important holiday for family reunions, falls on Jan 23.
