Chinese vice president meets former Malaysian PM

BOAO, Hainan - Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Friday with former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, pledging to lift bilateral ties to a new level.

Xi met with Badawi on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in Boao, a resort town in China's southernmost Hainan province.
The forum is a pan-Asian platform of dialogue for key issues affecting Asia and the world.
Xi said China-Malaysia relations have entered a stage of healthy, stable and rapid development since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 36 years ago.
China and Malaysia are both important countries in Asia and share extensive common interests, and strategic cooperation between the two countries is conducive to regional peace and stability, said Xi.
"We are willing to work with the Malaysian side to enhance mutual understanding and friendship and lift bilateral strategic cooperation to a new level," said Xi.
Badawi said China would always be Malaysia's important and strategic partner and Malaysia would further promote political and economic relations with China.
