Chinese vice president meets senior Cuban military official

BEIJING - Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with a senior Cuban military official here Tuesday, calling for closer ties between the two countries and militaries.

"To further develop China-Cuba friendly cooperation not only complies with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also is of great significance for maintaining world peace and stability and boosting common development," said Xi.

Xi made the remarks during his meeting with Alvaro Lopez Miera, vice minister and chief of the General Staff of Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces.

Xi highlighted the sound development of China-Cuba ties since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1960, saying the two militaries have increased mutual understanding by stepping up exchanges and cooperation in terms of high-level exchanges and personnel training.

Xi also briefed Lopez on the upcoming Shanghai World Expo.

Lopez expressed his admiration for China's rapid economic and social development in recent years, hoping the two countries and militaries could further promote their ties to benefit the two peoples.

Arriving in China April 24, Lopez is scheduled to conclude his official goodwill visit on April 29. Lopez had met with Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army.
