SAIC branch recalls 58,477 vehicles in China

BEIJING - The passenger car branch of the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) will recall 58,477 Roewe550 cars in China after they were found to carry fuel leakage risks, according to China's top quality watchdog.

The recall, starting on Aug 25, will cover Roewe550 cars manufactured between May 2008 to August 2009, according to a statement from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Faulty designs in oil pumps may lead to fuel leakage with safety risks, the watchdog said, urging the company to recall the defective cars and determine whether other vehicles have similar problems.

Earlier data showed SAIC continued to lead Chinese auto manufacturers in terms of sales in the first seven months of 2014, selling 3.24 million cars during the period.
