Shenyang's 50 gas-electric hybrid buses to hit the road

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2015-11-20 14:08

Aiming at reducing vehicle exhaust, fifty green buses powered by gas and electricity debuted on Thursday in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China's Liaoning province.

This month, North and Northeast China have suffered air pollution due to poor meteorological conditions and the start of heating season.

The bus reserves a smart switch system to enable a conversion between its electric motor and its natural gas engine on the basis of speed.

When the vehicle's speed is below 25 km/h, electricity stored in the vehicle's capacitor and battery will be utilized to power the bus. If the speed maintains 25-45 km/h, the bus will consume both electricity and gas, while the gas engine will be solely fully operated after the speed reaches more than 45 km/h.

By comparing the 400,000 yuan ($62,680) to 500,000 yuan subsidiary for the oil-electric vehicle from the local government, the gas-electric hybrid buses received more than 1 million yuan, according to Liaoshen Evening News, citing the manufacturer of the buses.

In 2011, the city launched oil-electric hybrid buses to provide public transit service.
