"More than 20 subsidiaries of Bluestar have been implementing the Qenos SHE system since 2011, and Lanzhou Silicon has encountered more problems than others due to its remote location and lower qualification of the staff," said Huang Haijun, deputy director of Bluestar's production and operation office.

But the improvement is also more significant, he added.

He told China Daily that there were numerous injuries every year before the company started to manage job safety with the SHE system. The injury rate has since been reduced year by year.

Lanzhou Silicon has established a system of awards and penalties to help employees foster safe production habits. It also set sidewalks in the production area as Qenos experts proposed and organizes rescue rehearsals annually to strengthen the staff's abilities to react to incidents.

Jonathan Clancy, CEO of Qenos, said "the work we do in the area of being a great corporate citizen is extensive".

"First and foremost it is our responsibility to be a world-class company in safety and environmental performance."

Qenos was recently honored as a "Good Corporate Citizen" on the Victoria Day festival that marks the establishment of the State of Victoria in Australia.

Another overseas company helping Lanzhou Silicon is Norwegian company Elkem, one of the world's leading suppliers of silicon products that was also acquired by Bluestar.

Elkem has also provided many useful suggestions about production safety, but for Lanzhou Silicon, its support with silicon smelting technologies was most important.
