Spring Festival drives up CPI in Feb

CPI growth in Spring Festival in past 5 years

The price changes of primary food products in 50 cities show that in early February, the price of pork and vegetables had increased significantly, and in late February the prices started to drop. According to a survey of some supermarkets in northern China, on February 10, leek and cucumbers peaked at $4.183 and $3.218 per kg, returning to $ 0.805 and $1.609 per kg on February 28.

Prices are unlikely to increase further in the near future. The 3.2 percent CPI in February may be the peak point for the following months because the effect of the Spring Festival has dissipated and the weather has also improved for transportation of fresh food products. Therefore, a sudden price surge of food products remains unlikely. If local governments ensure the supply of vital products lower logistic costs and strengthen market oversight, prices will remain stable and the CPI in March may drop.
