With a total area of 440,000 square meters (880-m-long and 500-m-wide), Tian'anmen Square, located in the center of Beijing, is the largest of its kind in the world. Over a hundred years, many ceremonies and demonstrations have been held here.
The spacious square was originally meant to demonstrate majestic imperial power, walled in on the eastern, western and southern sides, shutting out common people. As such, it is an ideal place for people to observe celebratory occasions or fly kites.
In 1989, Tian'anmen Square set up a giant flower garden to celebrate the National Day, which later became a tradition. Different parterres each year reflect the change in time.
Foreign visitors take photos in front of the main parterre, called "best wishes to the motherland", at the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing on Sept 25, 2014. It measures 50 meters wide and 15 meters in height. [Photo by Gong Wenbao/Asianewsphoto] |
