Important role

Xie said the countries' efforts to build the Maritime Silk Road will "set an important role model for the whole of Southeast Asia".

"We welcome Indonesia to discuss, construct and share the fruits of the Maritime Silk Road," he added.

Xie also said Indonesia's recent announcement of a visa-free policy to attract more tourists from China would promote people-to-people exchanges, which "have flourished to reach historic highs since the countries established a strategic partnership in 2005".

More than 1 million Chinese tourists visited Indonesia last year, according to the country's statistics. In a bid to attract even more Chinese tourists, the Indonesian government has launched the Zheng He Road Tour program.

The China National Tourism Administration will host major campaigns in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries under the theme of constructing the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, according to the ambassador.

"Such measures are expected to boost reciprocal visits and the tourist industries of both countries," Xie said.
