ASEAN urged to be more pro-active in global arena

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, said that the bloc needs to be more pro-active and creative in global arena following its success to be a regional organization that makes contribution in international stage, Kompas.com online news reported Monday.

"Overall, we have to contribute for climate of politic and security in Asia-Pacific that keeps changing towards better condition. Related to responsibility and our new role in the international stage, we are hoped to be more pro-active and more creative. We have to contribute to the world's governance, not just in economy but also in politic and security," Yudhoyono said in his remarks to commemorate the 44th ASEAN anniversary.

Yudhoyono said that ASEAN must continue dialogs with nuclear countries to reach an agreement of nuclear weapon free bloc.

He added that ASEAN must keeps holding dialog to create peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.

"We also have kept building achievement related to the creation of more positive politic and security climate in East Asia,"he said.

According to him, ASEAN's force does not lie on military but in dialog capacity, cooperation and problem solving.

"Our strength lies on our capability to change conflict potentials to be real cooperation," he said.
