M7.4 quake hits northeastern Japan

TOKYO - An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit the sea near Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan at 23:32 pm (1432 GMT) local Time Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Tsunami warnings or advisories are currently in effect, the agency said.  

The US Geological Survey said that the epicenter, with a depth of 40.00 km, was initially determined to be at 38.2000 degrees north latitude and 142.0000 degrees east longitude.

So far, there is no immediate report of damage or casualties.
