Wall Street edges higher ahead of earning season

NEW YORK -- The US stocks traded modestly higher on Monday as investors avoided making big bets ahead of the earning season.

There were no major economic data scheduled for release on Monday. Investors were cautiously awaiting Alcoa to report its second-quarter results after the market close, which officially kicks off a new earning season.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18.24 points, or 0.18 percent, to 10,216.27. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.79 points, or 0.07 percent, to 1,078.75 while the Nasdaq inched up 1. 91 points, or 0.09 percent, to 2,198.36.
