BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Commission has congratulated Barack Obama on being elected US president.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the EU's executive office, said this was a time for renewed commitment between the European Union and the United States.

He said they needed to change the current crisis into a new opportunity and would strike a new deal for a new world.

The EU is pressing the US to sign on to ambitious goals to slash greenhouse gases and help forge a stalled world trade pact. It also wants to the US to join an effort to increase global supervision over the financial industry in the wake of the credit crisis.
