The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says a humanitarian crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo won't end until there is peace. Antonio Guterres says tens of thousands of civilians are caught up in a humanitarian crisis as they escape fighting between rebels and government troops.

At Kiwanja, a town 70 kilometers outside Goma, at least 5,000 displaced people have settled in an area that has turned into a spontaneous camp. Humanitarian workers fear the tens of thousands more refugees from outlying areas around Goma will strain camps already bursting with families. Health experts say the massive displacement and concentration of people have also created higher rates of epidemics.
