A poor peasant Nemorino is in love with Adina, but Adina torments Nemorino with her indifference. Nemorino is also afraid she loves the arrogant Sergeant Belcore who appears with his regiment and immediately proposes marriage to Adina. The traveling quack salesman, Dulcamara arrives, selling his bottled "love potion" to the townspeople. Nemorino drinks it, but his confidence causes him to act indifferently toward her. This upsets Adina and she agrees to Belcore's proposal. The heartbroken sees the Doctor and begs him for another "love potion". Nemorino has no money, so he has to join the army to pay it. Adina knows the agony insides Nemorino and loves him back. She buys Nemorino's contract back. In the end, Belcore leads the army to leave, Dr. Dulcamara becomes wealthy by selling the "love potion", and Nemorino finally wins his love with Adina.
