ART

Seventy a special number for peace and patriotism

Date: Everyday through Sept 6

Venue: Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution

The opening of an exhibition of oil paintings by Wang Haili, Chinese Dream, Strong Army Dream was perfectly timed - on Aug 15, 70 years to the day that Japan offered its unconditional surrender in World War II.

The number of works being exhibited at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing also echoes the anniversary.

The museum head, Meng Shiqiang, said: "We chose more than 70 pieces of fine works from Wang's hundreds of paintings, and they are themed in clear, rich ideological connotations, vivid artistic skills, and have high aesthetic values that accurately reflect many aspects of the Chinese Communist Party's great achievements and the People's Liberation Army's valiant defense of the motherland against Japanese aggression.

"The works are also soulful and colorful expressions to demonstrate the Chinese national dream and belief of great rejuvenation."

The exhibition is not just about commemorating the anti-fascist war and honoring its heroes, said Li Bojun, secretary-general of Xi'an Federation of Literary and Art Circles.

"What is more important is to cherish peace and create the future. We uphold international justice, resolutely defend the fruits of victory of the world anti-fascist war, resolutely safeguard the United Nations' core notion of the post-war international order of peace, and jointly promote the lofty cause of human peace and development."

Wang Haili, who is an associate professor at Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, said he felt honored to have his works presented in the museum.

"The exhibition is not only a presentation of 40 years of hard work, it is also an expression of affection for my country. It is a great era, and with the earth and rivers, mountains, the moon and stars, and everything we love and cherish in this land, we create with affection our own flourishing culture."

The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1592. The nobleman then has the play performed for Sly's diversion. The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments - the "taming" - until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's more desirable sister, Bianca.

China has 20 percent of the world's population, but only 7 percent of its fresh water resources. As the population grows and pollution gets even worse, the problem China faces ever increases. Water is a precondition for life, and an essential resource for the industries and infrastructure that drive economic development. We are exploiting fresh water at an unsustainable rate. This occurs at all levels, from an individual to a national stage, and is an issue that we need to address now before it is too late.

Housing the Loop featuring DJ T.

Date: Sept 26 - 10 pm

Venue: The Bar at Migas

Price: 70 yuan

Housing the Bar meets Eddie Lv's The Loop to bring a truly legendary DJ and producer - DJ T. From booty-bouncing deep house to forward disco grooves to straight up Jacking tracks, expect sounds that rattle your soul and lift you up off one of Beijing's best dance floors. Thomas Koch aka DJ T. has been a vital part of electronic music and club culture for over 20 years. Uniquely accomplished in both influence and scope, he has excelled in every one of his incarnations: DJ, label owner, producer, club operator, publisher and journalist. As disco reached its shimmering apex in the late 1970s, young Dusseldorf-born Thomas relocated to Frankfurt with his family. His parents plied him with vinyl compilations, and as a nine-year-old he succumbed to disco's seductive charms, beginning a lifelong commitment to crate digging and vinyl collection. Thomas' budding obsession moved through disco and hi-nrg, to the burgeoning sounds of early American rap & hip hop music, and finally to electro-funk, the beloved genre that has left an indelible imprint on all of DJ T.'s own productions. It was love at first listen, and driven by the sounds of seminal protagonists like Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Patrol, Newcleus and Mantronix, Thomas took up breakdancing, compelled to move by the genre's urgent funk and infectious beats. In 1989, T. founded the influential German-language magazine Groove. T.'s intention, in his own words, was to "create a magazine that would meet my own needs." T. also contributed to anthologies on club music, such as Localiser 1.0 and Techno.
