Mortar attack kills 6 in Syrian capital

Xinhua | Updated: 2017-11-17 10:45

DAMASCUS - At least six people were killed and 45 others wounded on Thursday by a fresh rebel mortar attack on the residential areas in the capital Damascus, state news agency SANA reported.

The rebels in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus fired the mortar rounds, which slammed the areas of Saba Bahrat, Abassyin, and Sweika in Damascus, said SANA.

It added that the attack is a violation of the de-escalation zones' deal, which recently included the Eastern Ghouta region under a Russian-Egyptian mediation.

Meanwhile, people in the aforementioned areas posted some photos online, showing people laying on the ground with blood trickling out of their heads as a result of the attack.

The mortar attacks come also as the Syrian army and the rebels have been fighting for days in the Harasta area in northeastern Damascus after the rebels attempted to attack a military base near that area.

Syrian warplanes have been clearly heard over the past few days, with activists saying they are targeting the rebel positions in Harasta and nearby rebel-held areas.
