Indian diplomat: BRICS summit in Xiamen to have Chinese imprint

By An Baijie in Nanjing | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2017-02-24 16:42

The BRICS summit, to be held in September in Xiamen, is expected to have a "very innovative and exciting Chinese imprint" as China became the rotating presidency this year, said a senior Indian diplomat.

Alok A. Dimri, joint secretary of multilateral economic relations at India's Ministry of External Affairs, said on Friday that the BRICS members - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - are looking forward to establishing their own mechanism in areas including finance, commerce, people-to-people exchanges and education.

"BRICS is an organization where each (rotating) presidency brings its flavor. We are looking forward to a very innovative and exciting Chinese imprint on the BRICS chairmanship," he told reporters while attending a meeting for the preparation works of this year's BRICS summit.

The BRICS countries are working for open trade and globalization as "this is one of the crucial points how BRICS will be able to bring in difference because open world is in own interests", he added.

"The commodities, products, markets and consumers, they must remain connected. If this connection is broken at any point, there will be reactions to it. So protectionism is a challenge to open global trade and open global order," he said.

"BRICS is a process which is fulfilling our own needs in emerging market and developing market. We are very excited to look forward to China, which is a great country with great civilization. It is also one of the biggest markets in Asia," he added.
