UNITED NATIONS -- Concerned by the political crisis in Thailand, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday strongly urged all parties in the country to engage in meaningful and inclusive dialogues as soon as possible.

"The Secretary-General is increasingly concerned about the political crisis in Thailand. He has condemned the recent escalation of violence in different parts of the country," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesman in New York.

The UN chief believed strongly that there should be no place for violence by any side in resolving political differences and disputes, said the statement, which urged the parties and all concerned to respect human rights and the rule of law.

Expressing his readiness to assist the parties and the Thai people in any way possible, Ban strongly urged the parties to "engage as soon as possible in meaningful and inclusive dialogue toward ending the crisis and advancing genuine reform."

Thailand has seen sporadic violence since political unrest erupted in late 2013. At least 20 people have been killed and 718 injured in political violence in capital Bangkok since November 30 last year.
