CAIRO - Clashes between Egyptian police and stone throwing youths that broke out in Cairo on Tuesday and continued overnight have left 590 people injured, the Health Ministry said.

Up to 40 members of the security forces were among those hurt, it said in a statement. Ambulance workers treated people mostly for inhaling tear gas that police fired to disperse the rioting youths.

It was the first such violence for weeks in Tahrir Square, the centre of a revolt that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in February.
