GAZA - Hamas authorities executed a Palestinian convicted of collaboration with Israel in the Gaza Strip, the Hamas Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

A firing squad carried out the execution at dawn in Gaza City, the ministry said in a statement.

On April 19, a Hamas court charged the man with spying and collaborating with Israel in ways led to the death of other Palestinians, according to the statement.

The execution was carried out without being approved by Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has been based in the West Bank since Hamas routed his forces and took over Gaza in 2007.

The execution also comes as Hamas and Abbas' Fatah party will sign an agreement in Cairo on Wednesday to end the split and restore political unity between Gaza and the West Bank.
