CAIRO  - Traffic through Egypt's Suez Canal was disrupted after a 42,000-tonne container ship ran aground on Sunday due to engine failure, an official at the Suez Canal Authority said.

The ship ran aground at al-Kantara city near the Mediterranean port city of Port Said, blocking the movement of 28 other ships in the waterway, the official said.

Efforts were under way to move the ship that round aground, the official said. No further details about the ship were available.
