Toronto mayor's crack scandal
Toronto is burning with anger after a report claiming there is a video that shows the city's mayor smoking crack cocaine. A drug dealer who was in possession of the alleged video showed reporters from Gawker and the Toronto Star, and that viewing led to the reports. The video has not been released yet, as the person was trying to sell it for $200,000. The mayor has vehemently denied the accusations. UPDATE: A fundraising campaign has attracted more than the $200,000 asking price, so there is hope the video will be released soon. But one of the alleged drug dealers related to the video has reportedly gone missing.
A lesson in tourism
One Chinese tourist garnered some negative attention after someone posted a photo on the Internet of the young man's carvings on an ancient Egyptian temple. Chinese tourists' bad behavior has been a hot topic in the country since one official scolded travelers for poorly representing China while abroad. Some reports called the boy's writing "graffiti". But I'm not quite sure I'd call it that. Graffiti is a word used to describe a form of art in which a person usually uses spray paint to create a design on a wall. Many other stories of bad tourism behavior have become big news this year. So, to try and stop anything like this from happening again, we put together a little guidebook on how to act when you're traveling overseas.
Evidence of Obama affair?
Speaking at a celebration for Pacific Islanders in the United States, President Barack Obama took to the stage to have yet another possible scandal-maker reach the spotlight. With a slew of other controversies surrounding his administration, Obama was in damage control this week as he acknowledged a lipstick stain on the collar of his shirt and called out a member of the audience to avoid getting in trouble with Michelle.
This wacky world!
The governor of Colorado rolled up and passed laws to create the United States' first legal, regulated and taxed marijuana market. That is truly monumental legislation.
After announcing they did not want uncool, fat or homeless people wearing their clothes, clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch has reported declining sales. I can't imagine why.
The new pope recently said that atheists, people who do not believe God exists, can still go to heaven if they do good deeds. That's a major shift in view for the Catholic Church. UPDATE: A Vatican spokesman came out to clarify the pope's comments, disappointing me, at least, with its adherence to its normal, exclusive attitude.
After this week, make sure to tune into The Week at its new release time, Friday mornings!
