The China National Tourism Administration will coordinate construction of 33,000 toilets nationwide in the next three years, according to a meeting in Guilin, the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous regio, on Feb 26.

The administration will also help expand 24,000 toilets across the country.

"Public toilets are necessary for travelers and reflect public service quality," says Li Jinzao, chairman of administration.

The toilet issue is important to China, which annually receives more than 3.7 billion tourists, Li says.

The administration will help all public toilets reach proper standards through policy guidance and subsidy.

It will work out a new national toilet rating system, which encourages simple, clean and environment-friendly toilets.

New technology and materials that conserve water and energy will be introduced and flush-free and bio-tech toilets will be encouraged, says the administration.

A total of 13,000 toilets will be built this year, and 9,000 will be renovated and expanded.

Li says that the needs of the elderly, women, children and the disabled will be taken into consideration in toilet development, and efforts will be made to explore a long-term effective management for public bathrooms.
