MOSCOW - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has demanded to safeguard the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi against the "possible provocations", local media reported on Friday.

"Those forces which prevent us to hold the Sochi Olympic Games must be detected and prosecuted, if they are our citizens," Medvedev told the Russia's Security Council in Southern Russian region of Krasnaya Polyana.

He even warned officials about Georgia, saying that "there are certain problems linked to the neighboring Georgia."

Medvedev demanded the Foreign Ministry, the law enforcement agencies and the special services to do "all necessarily not to let the Olympic Games be disrupted."

The president also revealed the office in charge of the security of the games would start operating in 2012.

Georgia, which has conflicted with Russia in August 2008, is unhappy that the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to be held in a direct proximity to the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia, which Russia recognizes as an independent state since 2008.
