I lived in Western China from 2005 to 2007 and have visited three times since.
The most striking feature to me is the rapid building of infrastructure. When I arrived in Chongqing in 2005, there were so many cranes on the horizon, building thousands of apartments. New bridges have been built across the Yangtze. A new modern railway station has been constructed and a new opera house. The airport is a new modern one. The highways are very good.
And this is being repeated all over China.
