World Health Organization statistics released last week show that worldwide more than 800,000 people a year take their own lives - around one every 40 seconds.
There are many steps we can take to improve our response to people with suicidal thoughts and we may help them reduce their suffering or even save their lives. The following are tips recommended by suicide prevention organizations and experts.
1 Take them seriously
If someone shows suicidal thoughts, or utters strange words, for example: "I'm going to be free soon," don't consider they are joking. Never think problems are not bad enough to commit suicide over. Do not assume that because you feel something is not worth feeling suicidal about, the person in trouble feels the same way.
2 Listen carefully
Try to be a quiet and patient listener and let them speak out about their trouble or pain and air their feelings. Avoid judging by your own values and give them relief from being alone with their troubles and let them know you are always ready to help.
