Betty Palmer was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles where she is being treated in the facility's respiratory intensive care unit.
Johnny, 48, visited his beloved mother last night (29.07.12).
This is the latest blow for the actor following his split from Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his two children, Lily-Rose, 13, and 10-year-old Jack, after 14 years together.
It was recently revealed is desperate to rekindle his relationship with Vanessa and he flew to the South of France in a bid to patch things up with the model, giving her an antique gold pendant bearing the message "My heart is always with you."
A source close to the couple said: "They are having a family holiday to show the kids they are still a strong family even if those two are split or not.
"But the fact he presented her with such a touching gift, it's almost as if they could make another go of things. Johnny wants to be with his family, he's a very family orientated man. His kids mean everything to him.
"What they need more than anything is to get together far away from Hollywood and that is what they are doing."
