Man executed for college rape

A former college student in Wuhan was executed after a court convicted him of raping and killing a female student on campus. The former student, surnamed Wang, could not afford a cellphone, and a fellow student had told him to find one left behind in a classroom. Wang encountered the woman and raped her; and he stabbed her to death with scissors, the Wuhan Intermediate People's Court said.

Parents persuaded to forgo abortion

A 7-year-old girl in Wuhan begged her parents to have a second child when her mother was considering abortion after an unexpected pregnancy. The couple were discussing the possibility of an abortion over worries about the added financial pressure of another child. Their conversation was overheard by their daughter, who strongly objected. The couple was eventually persuaded by their daughter to give birth to the baby.

Insurance policy said to lose value

A life insurance policy that guaranteed 5 million yuan 64 years ago was deemed to be worth about 500 yuan ($76) by an insurance company. The policy, issued by China Life Insurance Co, was passed down to a resident of Wuhan by his grandfather. It was not recognized as convertible by a branch of the company in Wuhan. The resident, surnamed Cao, found the document as he was cleaning an old family house. A worker at a branch of China Life said the bill would be worth about 500 yuan right now.

Suspected jewelry thief captured

A suspected jewelry thief in Nanning managed to resell 5 million yuan worth of the loot for 50,000 yuan before being captured by local police. The suspect committed more than 20 jewelry thefts between February and December from several shops in Nanning.

Seniorman shreds money with scissors

An 85-year-old man in Anshan used scissors to shred 140,000 yuan of currency into small pieces, and his son and daughter-in-laws pent three months putting about 100,000 yuan back together. The man, surnamed Chen, shredded the money, which came from real estate, on an impulse. His son and daughter-in-law later managed to piece together 100,000 yuan and received new money in exchange at a local bank branch.

Reward offered for phone card

A man in Changzhou lost his mobile phone and posted a note online asking for the return of the SIM card, which held photos of his deceased wife. Song Guoquan's wife died of breast cancer in July, and the card contained a dozen photos of her from 2007 to 2009. He lost the phone on Jan 12 and said he would pay 600 yuan to get the card back.

Joker pays after neighbor dies

Aman, surnamed Zhou, in Zunyi county paid 60,000 yuan compensation after failing to help his neighbor. Zhou met his neighbor, Gou, on the street in February last year, and the two men made jokes about each other. Suddenly, Gou fell, and Zhou was frightened and ran away without attempting to help. Gou was sent to a hospital by others, but later died. Gou's family reported the incident to police. An autopsy showed that Gou died of respiratory failure caused by coronary heart disease.

Man accused of stealing jewelry

A man from Chengdu who pretended to be a backpacker on tour in Aba prefecture stole gold and silver jewelry from Tibetan people's houses, according to the police. The man, surnamed Zhang, 36, committed the thefts-valued at more than 1 million yuan-from July to October, the police said. He was caught in November. The case is under investigation.

Daughter killed for wetting pants

A man in Yuncheng beat his daughter to death after she wet her pants, police said. Surnamed He, the man often beat the 6-year-old, who had mental challenges and could not properly control her behavior, the police said. During a beating on Jan 1, she died. The father, 33, turned himself in. The case is under further investigation.

Suspects in theft, blackmail caught

Two men in Taiyuan were detained by police for robbing two single women in separate incidents and taking nude photos of them. They threatened the victims that the photos would be exposed if they reported the incidents, the police said. There were two such incidents that night, they said. The men were caught five days later.
