Xintiandi, an affluent car-free shopping, eating and entertainment district of Shanghai, will be hosting a major outdoor countdown party to celebrate the new year of 2016.
Sun Zhongming, head of the tourism administration of Huangpu stressed the importance of this event being the main one in Shanghai.
"No other outdoor events will take place in the district, which includes the most central area of Shanghai," said Sun.
Last year, on the New Year's Eve, a stampede incident happened at the Bund (also part of the Shanghai's Huangpu district), killing 36 and injuring 49.
"To ensure everyone's safety, extra-strict rules will be applied in this year's countdown party," said Sun.
The party will take place at Taiping Lake, where the stage will be built above water. Only 4800 tickets will be handed out.
"The area will be closed, so if you can't access the closed area, you won't be able to see anything."
The party will start with a dance performance by the US's X-treme Future Couture. It will also feature singers such as A-lin and Hacken Lee. For those who are unable to attend, the show will be broadcasted live on TV, radio FM103.7, as well as video and audio sharing websites such as Youku and Iqiyi.
Starting today, consumers who spend 1688 RMB at malls and boutique shops in Xintiandi will be able to pick up two tickets for the countdown party.
From 2002 to 2012, Xintiandi held annual New Year's Eve countdown parties.
"We will strictly follow police instruction, to administrate the people and traffic flow," said Sun.
Private cars will have great difficulty entering the area, and public transportation departments will extend operation hours to cope with the late-night passengers.
Huangpi Road South will be closed during party hours, and will only be used as an evacuation path in case of emergency.
