While some photographers prefer new and strange places for inspiration, Liu Yao takes most of her photos at home in the southern city of Nanjing, trying to find something refreshing in a familiar environment.

When she takes photos outdoors, Liu shoots in movement. After setting the tripod and the shutter timer, she starts walking and waits for the shutter to click.

Liu shot this image during her visit to Daliu township, East China's Anhui province, in 2014.

Liu doesn't like expensive equipment or fancy Photoshop. Instead, she tries to tell stories through her photos looking as natural as possible

Liu started painting when she was young, but switched to photography after retirement because it takes longer to put on canvas what she has in mind compared to showing it through photography. "Photography adds wings to my pursuit of dream," said Liu.

Liu likes photographing herself.

In her photos, Liu is everything but a senior woman. She dresses in the clothes made by herself, which though simple but look chic in her lens.

Liu likes hats and has dozens of them, but seldom wears them. Liu likes to wear and make scarf, though, and features one in each of photo.

Not long ago Liu hosted a small exhibition at her home where she showcased about 100 of her photos to more than 100 visitors. This is a one of Liu Yao's selfies at the exhibition. This image summarizes my life and I'm happy and content to see my little wish come true, said Liu.
