The All-China Women's Federation released 10 recent high profile cases about children's and women's rights protection on Friday, promoting public awareness of the rule of law to mark the country's second Constitution Day on Dec 4.
Cases include those involving women and adolescents suffering from domestic violence, sexually assaulted and raped girls and women illegally fired for their pregnancies.
"Cases involving sexually assaulting children happen from time to time. We selected two cases, showcasing the prosecution's determination to tackle such criminals," said Liu Yaqing, senior prosecutor from the Supreme People's Procuratorate, adding that it is essential for childcare service departments to be alert to potential child assault cases.
One case used as an example was a father in Jiangsu province who was sentenced to prison for 11 years in 2013 for sexually assaulting and raping his then-9-year-old biological daughter. The prosecutor found the girl was in danger and the mother was not able to provide guardianship properly.
The local civil affairs bureau sued the mother to terminate her guardianship in January, 2015.
"It is the first case across the country that the civil affairs department requested to end a child's biological parents' guardianship," Liu said, adding that this case was a successful example to protect the child’s right through a collaboration between the local prosecuratorate and civil affairs department.
The demo cases also provided samples for prosecutors, lawyers and judges to deal with similar cases in the future, said Zhang Xuemei, executive director of Beijing Children's Legal Aid and Research Center.
The 10 were selected from more than 300 cases. The federation will continue to promote rights protection cases in the future, said Tan Lin, a senior official from the federation.
