BEIJING - Chinese authorities have called for frugal but effective activities to boost relations between civilians and the army during the upcoming holidays.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said in a Wednesday circular that local Party and government departments should visit troops on duty and help solve their difficulties in life and work during the New Year's holiday and the traditional Spring Festival, which falls on January 31.

The circular cited issues that could be helped, such as the protection of military facilities and the construction of exercise venues.

"Visits should especially be paid to officers and soldiers stationed in remote and difficult regions, such as highlands and islands, with efforts to encourage them to work hard to protect the country and the people," said the circular.

According to the circular, various social groups should be mobilized to carry out technology, knowledge and culture-themed activities to help raise the quality of the army.

Meanwhile, it urged military units to visit and take care of civilians in special need, such as the impoverished, the disabled, elderly living alone and those affected by natural disasters.

According to the circular, troops should also visit local Party and government departments to gather advice and correct mistakes in order to maintain a good image for the public.

In addition, it urged the effective implementation of various support policies, including those dealing with problems regarding the employment and daily life of ex-soldiers, the wounded, retired army officers and spouses staying with troops.
